M eletrical parts

does anyone have info or P/N for a resistor on ignition switch for generator? would Radio shack carrie this resistor? also cut-out relay at Napa? my jd dealer wants a fortune for "M" parts, would like to save some on small parts. thanks, d. coleman

d.coleman,
The part number is 1838155, and my notes say that M-Man measured a NOS one and it measured 3.1 ohms. Your generator has a maximum field current of 3 amps, so 6 volts x 3 amps indicates 18 watts are disapated if the field current is fed to ground. So, a resistor wattage rating of 20 or 25 watts would be adequate. You can try RS, but I have better luck at a local electronics supply place. It may not be real cheap, but should be less than 15 bucks.

You might be better off considering a new switch which would include the current control resistor (I assume replacement ones do, if they are designed to be used with a cutout).

Your local NAPA dealer should have a generic 6V cutout and will probably have 2 grades - the cheaper ones may not have a good lifetime.....

DC, As I recall Rat Shack has like 1 ohm 20 watt power resistors and you could wire 3 in series (if you cant get a 3 ohm). Tractor Supply or Rural King type farm stores usually carry those what I call "fake" cutout relays which are merely a diode and can work for Pos or Neg ground at 6 or 12 volts or go see Jim there at Agri Services up in new York where Rob referred you. Dont forget the switch needs a good to frame ground so it can connect the gennys Field direct to ground (high charge) or via the resistors to ground (low charge).
