M Governor Problems

Hey guys! I drug home another M, guy told me it was always running fine, etc etc... We managed to get it fired up, but it wouldn't do anything but idle, but it idled REALLY nicely and smooth. Took the governor cover off, and it had a broken pin for one of the weights. I replaced the pin, made sure everything was free moving, and put cover back on.

I've since been into the tractor like 6 times. It fires up, but is very slow responding to throttle change, sometimes. Half the time you can grab the handle, and rev it from idle to wide open like normal, then it might not go back down to idle, or might not rev up again, or only half way, etc. How ever the motor still runs flawlessly. Doesn't lope, extremely smooth!

I'm just not really sure what to check? The butterfly in carb works smooth, so does the linkage going to the carb from the gov. Linkage from handle to back side of gov housing works properly, I feel like it has to be in the governor, but I just don't know what?

Thanks! Bryce

I hadn't thought of that, a good idea though. I'll fire it up and disconnect the linkage at idle and see what I can do by hand.

Hey Bryce! I know you have checked, but I have to ask. Are you sure the notch and tang are lined up? Also check the spring. a weak spring cn cause that. Are all the adjustmentments correct? From you description, sounds like something may be binding up,not moveing freely.Have you tried a governor from another tractor?Good Luck!! Steve

Yes, I've had the carb off, and am fairly positive they are lined up! I was sure that's what the problem was at first, but is not.

How can I go about "checking" the spring? I haven't tried another governor, but I am tempted to. I've got another M here that I am assuming is/was a good runner, seems fairly simple to change them.

Do you have a source for properly adjusting one of them?

Adjust according to the book.(I&T).Just guessing on the spring. Just swap one from another governor. Have you removed the little oil feed cover on top and looked at the adjustment there? Just guessing..... Have you removed the governor? Dissambled it? Is the shaft grooved? If you remove it,there is a 3/8 bolt hidden between the governor and block. Takes a 9/16 socket (3/8 drive) and extension.

All you have to do is flip the breather pipe up on governor and watch the linkage when you pull the throttle. Unhook throttle rod at governor and operate the external lever on governor by hand. If the link to carburetor pops right up to top, wide open throttle and back down to idle when you put lever in idle position, you have elemenated governor.

Make sure that linkage is adjusted properly so with carburetor fully open and governor fully wide open throttle the pin just aligns in linkages.

Okay guys, here what we came up with!

Part of the problem, was that the butterfly inside the carb was loose, and binding up in the flute, which probably explains the random throttle a little.

After fixing that, it still responded kinda strange, we adjusted according to an I T shop manual, and didn't really change anything. Ended up taking a governor complete off of a spare M I have here, and that fixed it %100. Runs perfect, makes very good power, couldn't be happier!

My question now, according to what we see in the manual, an H and M gov is the adjusted the same? In person they appear to be nearly identical? I've got a really trashed H sitting here, and we are wondering if we can take the gov off of it and put it on the M that we robbed the one off of today??

Thanks!

Both tractors run 200 rpm different. Since you have both, hold them in your hand and compare.I'm positive that they are different.

The H and M governors are basically the same except for four differences:

1-The vertical link is 1" longer on the M

2 Linkage housing-1" taller on M

3 The throttle shaft and throttle shaft housing is 1" longer on the M

4 Drive gear- M-17 teeth, H 16 teeth

When running at wide open throttle the governor shafts are turning the same speed

because the crankshaft gears are also different : M 29, H 24, so at 1595 rpm, M gov.

shaft is turning 2721 rpm's. The H at 1815 is turning 2722.

So with a couple changes, the H and M governors can be used on either tractor.

Good luck with your project.

Fantastic! Thank you very much!

I've got a mostly complete M gov, but its the one we can't seem to make work. I can rob all those parts off of it, and put them on my H gov, and hopefully have a good setup! Thanks again
