M heat gauge

Just put a new heat gauge in my 48 M. At a fast idle it holds at 205 degrees. Is this a good temp to be at??

Yes it's fine. Anywhere from 190 to 225 is good. Around 230/235 the antifreeze starts to boil out the overflow and then you get in trouble if you don't catch it.

I grew up on an MT. The gauge always showed hot even though the tractor was not overheating. Seems I read once that it had something to do with where the sending unit was located on that engine.

My MT always ran hot on the gauge but it never boiled over. I could work it all day and not have an issue even though the gauge was around 220. I even took the gauge out and put it in a boiling pot of water.

Agree.

Take a look at the photos below of "Sam" one of our 51Ms.

Note the sending unit is installed on the manifold.

Note the block has a plug.
