M serial number

I just bought a M farmall that has not got a serial number tag on it. According to the engine code if it is the original engine it would be 1-9 1951 but I don?t know how to find out if it is all original or not or where to begin to know what the number would be for this tractor. Can someone tell me where are what I should be looking for

Look for the date codes on the rear end, transmission and other major castings. If they are a few mouths apart, odds are pretty strong it is the original engine.

Date codes are in a series of numbers and letters as shown here. the top sequence is the date code the bottom is serial number. The first is the month, second is day, and the last (right) is a letter. The list attached is the code. Jim

code meaning

DD is the suffix of the transmission housing casting number. Can see the number in picture and the date code housing was cast is a little forward and higher and partly covered in picture. If the engine has 1-9-U on it the other castings would probably end with a T or U. Letter stands for the year and other numbers are month and day. Help to know the engine serial number.

Under the first spark plug, take some sand paper and a steel brush,[on the boss, flat spot] that's where the engine number is stamped, the last three number are the same as the serial number, would of been if it is missing! Mine was engine was casted 2-28-W,my serial number is 258366 Is your's a W also ??

Didn't get picture on. Second picture is a spot where the serial number can be found for engine. Just above the long cover on oil filter side and below the first spark plug to front of engine. Will be stamped in with letters in the prefix and can have letter and number suffix.

One to many pictures. Housing on top of transmission housing is a example of a date code. 12-16-Z

I?m not sure exactly what Fast was trying to say but the M engine ID numbers and tractor serial numbers do not match. Date codes generally will within a month or so. For example a rear end housing may have been cast in Dec. of 49 but installed on a Jan. 50 tractor.

I have about 6 old H's and M's here,my number all match,[meaning they are the same]the last three number of the serial number, match the last three of the engine number ! I got a neighbor lady who has a M, in the low 30,000, and i knew her dad pretty good, he bought his M new so i am positive it has the original engine, but that one doesn't match, but look in the registry, the ones that have it listed match also, most of the time

Thought you meant that was the engine serial number so I was going for the tractor serial number. If 258366 is the tractor the engine is probably 246366.

Okay, sorry I called you out on that Fast, apparently was misinformed. I?ll have to look at the engine number on my M and my uncles H when I get back to the farm in KS. I thought it was explained that the tractor and engine number would start off matching at the first of the year. Once engines were pulled out of line for a power unit or a diesel tractor was built, which diesels had their own set of numbers, then the numbers would no longer match. Must have been bad info.

Thank you all I have found that the engine is original to this tractor because everything does match it. I can?t find a good pic of the dash and operator station because I do want to put it all back original so having a hard time finding that I am unsure of the leaver that turns your hydraulics on and the belt drive

Guess it fooled me on that one, all I have wrote down are 11000 apart just below your number and 12000 apart near your number.

That's the engine block casting number. Look at the long metal cover below the cast number. It runs behind the oil filter and to near front of block. Look just on the upper edge of cover and down below the area of the first spark plug for a small flat raised area. Number is stamped in there, may be hard to see without scraping the area.

Interested in information on tractors. Would you care to post the engine serial number and if it has a U or W date letter?
