M starter switch

Purchased a 1945 M (FBK 96758) last week. The
starter switch is stock & located behind the
stanchion bar that supports the steering & light
bar. Someone drilled a hole thru the stanchion &
inserted a pin to actuate the starter button. I
saw several other Ms that had a starter "device"
clamped to the stanchion - looked in Steiner's on
line catalog but don't see that item - who has
them?? (what are they called) Any help would be
appreciated! Also - what's a good
(inexpensive)source for oil filters? I can't
believe they charge $16-$18 for a paper element!

Don't remember a serial number break right now, but early tractors came with the pin through the steering support post. Used ones can be found pretty easy. Put a wanted ad in the classified section or look on flee bay.

In my experience, if the push button switch is operated with the pin through the steering support, the switch will be in a slightly different location in the fuel tank support than if the switch is operated with the foot control lever. (Clear as mud?) In other words, if you want to change over the foot operated lever, you will also need to change out the fuel tank rear support.

Another option is go with the cast iron bracket that mounts the starter switch opposite the ammeter/light switch box, on the support column. That option puts the switch up where you can push it with your hand.

Starting switch actuating lever bracket 351924R1, and lever 351922R11. They were originally part of hydraulic seat attachment 351928R1,2,etc. 45 M should have the rear fuel tank support 51137DA for the starting lever to work if the correct length switch is installed. IH made so many starting or lighting attachments or both that its hard to pinpoint a certain time for items. Lots of early tractors had starting and lighting installed after new.

We have repro starter pedals as you are asking about. We have been selling and fabricating them for about 6 months. Picture included here for reference. Built to factory specs. Dwayne

There are quite a few listed on Ebay under Farmall H or M. I have one on my M and is great. Joes Farmall Part in Clarion PA and others have taken to having them made. Sell in neighborhood of 10-25 dollars

I converted my 1940 M from a pin to a foot lever and the switch was indeed in a different postion. I had to cut the weld and move the tab that pushes on the starter switch to the other side of the round rod. Other than that, line it up and drill the thru hole.
