M starter

Will a M starter work on an A if I use a solenoid? I want to go to key start in place of a starter rod for this project.

No problem. A Ford starter relay (often called a solenoid) is a good choice. (cheap and rugged) 1960 Ford Fairlane V8 will do fine. If you are six volts, a Ford from, 1955,or older will work. There are 4 terminals, the I terminal bypasses the ballast resistor (connect to the coil at the negative terminal (which comes from the ballast resistor) The coil terminal marked - goes to the voltage source, positive to distributor if positive ground battery. If negative ground battery the negative terminal goes to the voltage source, and the positive to distributor. If mag ignore the coil and I terminal stuff above. Jim

I need to go to a threaded lug to attach a battery cable instead of the A starter which is made for a starter mounted manual switch. Will a starter from a M or H fit? Or maybe I could drill and tap the lug (bump) on the A starter?

Cutting across it flat then drilling and tapping 1/4-20 would be about as big as reasonable. Using a copper connector, and 0 gauge wire with a copper top washer would be OK. If that doesn't work, a starter repair shop can install a stud for a reasonable cost. Jim

On my SMTA I took starter to a electrical repair place and they changed it to a terminal so I could use push button.

FYI, This will work on a C as well. I mounted a Ford solenoid in the wiring box and mounted a push-button to the cover. Might drive the purists nuts though.
