M&W Pyrometer value?

My Dad gave me this and I have no clue what it's for (exhaust temp?), after a little research I still can't find the value of this thing. It looks like it's popular with IH crowd? I don't know but the box is cool. Any help appreciated, I guess Ebay auction would be the easiest route for finding out? Thanks in advance

What is it worth? I would prefer to use an infrared meter to measure exhaust temps vs a pyrometer. Value to me is nothing,

It’s for exhaust temp yes Otr trucks had them paired with a boost gauge.

Perhaps a repost in the tractor pulling side and someone will give you some information price wise

Handy to have you can choose to slow down if overworking. What that means is different I guess on a 4020 with the m and w kit but I suppose you would get to know what temp it’s usually operating at.

Back in the day they were recommended for any tractor that had an M&W turbo added. Lots of 4020s and 806s had one. M&W was a pretty straight up company to do with business and they made great products. But If you put one their turbos on a tractor back then you should have also added a pyro and their finned oil pan. Maybe they sold a kit with a turbo, pyro and oil pan, but I know you could buy the turbo and its mountings separate. Because of the increased heat from the turbo, that led to problems with bearings, cranks, etc. when the farmer added another plow bottom and/or shifted up a gear. The pyro and finned oil pan really helped to avoid those problems. Dad never had any problems because we had Oliver's and M&W didn't make a turbo for them. They thought the Oliver/Waukesha engines could not take the extra horsepower as good as the IH and Deere engines could. I guess the 1855 kind of proved that point.

Thanks, that's good info and a great synopsis that's not available on Google...

They are very useful when driving a standard transmission low RPM engined truck to let you know that you need to shift down.

Thats not very accurate or convenient when working tractor out in the field
I put one on my Jubilee to adjust the carb. I was not Impressed.
I used an I R thermometer to instantly measure the exhaust temp of a 2 cylinder engine. One cylinder was 900F and the other cylinder was 700F. I lapped the valves on the 700F cylinder and then both showed 900F. My son had a 4 cylinder motor cycle that was running o 3 cylinders=. It didn't take long to find the cylinder that was not working, I'm a fan of IR thermometer. Please Use what makes you happy.

my car has a temp gauge in the transmission . My car was ordered with a toe package, trans cooler, and the transmission temp is about 50 F below water temp. I have no plans to ever put a hitch on the car.

Thats not what a pyrometer is for

comparing apples to oranges, a pyrometer is for a turbo diesel engine that is working. Not to find a miss fire in a gas engine.
