M&W Pyrometer value?

I put one on my Jubilee to adjust the carb. I was not Impressed.
I used an I R thermometer to instantly measure the exhaust temp of a 2 cylinder engine. One cylinder was 900F and the other cylinder was 700F. I lapped the valves on the 700F cylinder and then both showed 900F. My son had a 4 cylinder motor cycle that was running o 3 cylinders=. It didn't take long to find the cylinder that was not working, I'm a fan of IR thermometer. Please Use what makes you happy.
Tell me you have absolutely no clue what a pyrometer is for without actually telling me you have no clue.

Don’t tell me I need a pyrometer!

My Dad gave me this and I have no clue what it's for (exhaust temp?), after a little research I still can't find the value of this thing. It looks like it's popular with IH crowd? I don't know but the box is cool. Any help appreciated, I guess Ebay auction would be the easiest route for finding out? Thanks in advanceView attachment 136664
comparing apples to oranges, a pyrometer is for a turbo diesel engine that is working. Not to find a miss fire in a gas engine.
My 2470 has a pyrometer in the dash

A pyrometer is a great little instrument to let you know when you are about to melt a piston, or get it hot enough to break ring ledges or other undesirable things that happen to over heated/over fueled engines. By the time the cooling system catches up (if it's getting hot from over fueling) you've generally been in the throttle too long.
