is the jam nut that is placed on the bolt of the wheel and rim assembly necessary or is it just for convenience. The threads on the bolts I have are not deep enough to place a jam nut behind the outside clamp. I am replacing a cracked center wheel on my M. Thanks for any replies.

The jam nut is not necessary, just for convenience to hold the one clamp on. If you have a tap and die set it would be a simple matter to cut additional threads on the bolts so you can install the jam nuts.
