M with LPTO option

Looking at a 49 M with a LPTO attachment on the left side. The I.D. tag says MW CLUTCH-ANCHOR,ILL. Is this an M&W product or a different company?Tractor also has a 9 speed transmission and live hyd. Please talk me out of buying this project! Thanks for any information on the clutch.

It is not factory, M&W made add on accessories to update and increase power, as well as add gears and features. That tractor is not priceless, but is very usable. The live PTO is not iffy, but it is not cleanly a Live PTO. The lever operates a multi disk clutch that releases the left drive pinion causing the tractor to stop as though the left wheel was disconnected. The transmission is still operating, so the PTO keeps turning. They work OK to do that, but the transmission should not be shifted using it because the gears are turning. The 9 speed puts 4 additional speeds between about 6.5mph, of 4th gear and 18 mph of 5th gear. very handy for hauling wagons and light faster operations. The PTO cannot be used when in any of those gears because it overspeeds. Jim

Yes,it was made by the M/W company for H;M and some other makes.I have one on my SuperM. It works pretty well.Handy for baleing. The only time it ever slipped was at tractor pull on a hard 'nonslippable' track. The tractor is also'warmed up' a bit too. Normal fieldwork,no issues ever.I put it on used 30+ years ago. I still have all the info.An M and Super M do not use the 'same' clutch. I learned that the hard way when I was sold a clutch for an M. At that time,Dale Beilfeld and Dale Eier(two engeneers who helped develop it) were still at M/W. They both helped me and got me NOS parts to make it all work. There are most likely no parts left as I got some of the last ones in stock.I still have mot of a second one.I pd $200.00 for the two used clutches. Then spent almost $600 for the 'other stuff' to make it work. Yes,it was lot of money spent. But in the end it was worth it to get a LPTO tractor.I would like to sell both clutches as I dont bale with the tractor anymore.Your tractor with those options is neat. Not real common with both. Draws attention at trators shows. But really not worth much more than an M without them.Go for it and enjoy it.

Thank you for the information and some insight. The 49 M is not mine. It belongs to my best friend who passed away three years ago. I help his wife around the farm and upkeep on the property. there is also a 41 M with an M&W stroker kit and Schwartz WFE as well as a Super M with a single front. The SM is parts only and the two others have not run in years. Was just thinking out loud about making one out of the three. Would be a pretty nice tractor for which I have absolutely no use for. LOL

I got new clutch disc's for an M&W LPTO from a guy in Columbus, Nebraska, the thrust bearing from Industrial Bearing in Carroll, Iowa and a manual from someone in New York state. Everything was shot from setting for who knows how many years. I ran an add on this web site and had everything I needed in a week. I would be interested in the motor from the '41.
