If the torque unit is slipping real bad can the tractor be split and the unit removed? Then just run the tractor in direct speeds. In direct it slips as well. Is this the main clutch or the amp torc?

It is possible that it could be the clutch or the torque that is slipping. The most common problem with the Ampli-torc is for the sprague to fail and you will know if you have this problem because the tractor will not move with the lever in the low position. Another problem that may occour with a torque is when all of the tabs on the friction plates shear off and you will know when this happens because you can push the lever to the high "Direct" position and the tractor speed will not change from the low position because the plates spin inside of the hub. You'll know it when this happens because you'll lose the high side all together. If the torque is not adjusted properly, it would be possible for it to slip in high and the problem may be able to be resolved by adjusting the torque. Check to see that there is a fair amount of resistance when pushing the lever to the high side. If the tractor's main clutch is slipping, you would notice that the tractor may resist moving when a load is put on it in high range or low.

To also add to what Curt said. If you can find a donor machine that never had TA in it from the start. There is a rather large splined coupler that goes in place of the TA. Not sure the part number but I have a 5 star donor tractor that is set up that way. It has the coupler and where the handle would be on the transmission the hole has a plug in it.
