M602 Starting Issue

I have a M602 that I really like, but there is one issue with it. It is kind of a hard starter. It is a gas, not a diesel;. You have to crank it over for quite a while before it fires, and initially there is some black smoke as if it was flooded. The hard starting is only on issue when it has been sitting for a while. If you hit the starter within a short time of shutting it off, it starts immediately. Any thoughts on what ails it?

Check that your coil polarity matches the battery polarity, if battery is negative ground the minus on coil should go to side of distributor, if positive ground the positive on coil should go to side of distributor.

Some 602, according to my diagram, came from factory positive ground with generator. It it were changed to negative ground with alternator the coil may not have been switched. I have seen a couple MM's where reversed coil wires caused harder starting.

Have you checked points for condition and proper gap setting. Also check for excess play on distributor lobe shaft.
