mag on h

The mag on my h has more of a red spark then a blue one and seem to b weak.It has new wires and plugs.The wires have the steel running in them and the plugs are AC 3116. Thanks.

I had problem with a mag sent it to popin john to get checked out tested fine put on tractor wouldnt hit or start called him he told me to make sure it was in time I moved it some ,got it in time starts first or second try now, could be not timed just right.

A typical cause of a weak spark are dirty, burned, pitted or mis gapped contact points. Id check that first, maybe lightly clean/buff/polish them and check the gap, but if they are badly burned or pitted Id just install a new set. Other causes may be a bad condensor or the rotor has lost magnetic field strength and finaly the coil.

If the start impulse spark is weak it can also be caused by a weak impulse spring, it needs to produce a loud sharp SNAP when the impulse is tripped versus a faint dull clunk sound but thats hard to quantify especially over the net

Even if your mag is not in time that has nothing to do with how good a spark the mag will produce. As an example you can test your mag off of the tractor on a work bench.
