Magneto AND/OR Timing problem?

I got a funny problem that is not making sense to me.
I put in new points and condenser into my FM J magneto, and throws spark 3/8 inch on all wires as you turn the impulse.
Problem IS, even after reading MULTIPLE POSTINGS of how to time it to a Allis Model B, it just will not go. I know that it works as the engine runs good whe hooked up to the stock distributor.
Soooooo, any body got some good ideas as to what is what here? I would like to have it running by springtime!!!!!

Are you using the wrong switch? A mag has to have an open connection when running and grounded connection to stop. Distributor ignition is the opposite; it needs battery power to run and is disconnected to shut down.
With the mag installed, leave the primary wire disconnected while attempting to start the engine; if it runs, you can just touch a screwdriver from ground to the terminal to shut down.

On the internal timing, that is the thing.
there IS a "dot" on the steel pinion gear. BUT when I use that as a index, no fire. ALSO, I am told that this is not the mark. that it should be a chamfer or a red dot.
SOOOOOOOOO, obviously this a conflict.
