magneto kill switch

Will a OEM ignition switch on a 8N handle the job of killing the spark from a magneto? I am planning on running a wire from mag to switch and grounding the other side of the switch.

ff & on positions will be reversed, but sure.

As JMOR agrees, anything that provides an uninterrupted current flow from the "P-Lead" to ground WILL turn off or kill the magneto.

Usually, the key cannot be removed when the key switch is "on", where it would need to be to ground and kill the magneto. Therefore, the stock key switch may not be a safe alternative.

Yes. but the typical on position will be your off position. I have a magneto also, and I bought a magneto key switch off ebay. It was a better built switch than the one it replaced.

OK, thanks for the replies. Will use the switch at least for now. would be better if one could have it shorted out with the key removed, but then I never remove the key from my other 8n. No little fingers around that would be tempted to play it it.

R Geiger,Just a reminder,What ever you do make sure you don't apply any voltage to the magneto ground post lug. Or it will be by,by mag coil,also residual magnetism.

A starter button from a Ford car 37 to 48 will short the mag points.No need to run a ground wire.Switch clips into a hole in the dash.

Don't have any old fords sitting down in the woods anymore! Think my 49 ford had the push switch also.

A push switch only grounds the mag momentarily, so once you release the button it is "hot" again - a dangerous situation.

This switch grounds the points of the magneto.You hold it in until the engine stops.No voltage once the mag stops turning.You dont under stand magnetos at all Jock.

Cant rememeber.I think they used a two terminal starter button.The 37 to 48 switch will pop into a round hole and you only need 1 wire.Marine supply will have good magneto kill switches.

You can also get a key switch for a mag. I got one from NAPA.

You are absolutely correct, Jock.

A push switch leaves you with a HOT MAG if your finger is not ON the button. (Especially bad when there is a propeller on the crankshaft.)

Some folks ought to THINK IT THROUGH...

Key switch for push type lawn mower should be just what you need.
Only cost a few bucks, should last for many years.

This is a tractor not an airplane.My John Deere H doesnt have a kill switch on the magneto.All fuel tractors sre shut down by turning off the fuel.When the engine is running on kerosene the fuel valve is switched to gas then shut off.Stalling an engine with kerosene in the carberator will get you in trouble.Note that Ford tractors with magnetos are usually all fuel tractors.I find airplanes interesting but I wont get in one.Ive had too many engines shut down because of ignition failures.A broken point spring will do it.I have 2 Ford V8 distributors under the bench with broken left side point springs and I had one break on the road years ago.Same side.Once again your Ford tractor is not an airplane.There was a plane powered by a Model A engine.I have had a Model A that would travel about 1000 feet and shut down because of a bad condensor.This would let you take off and crash if this engine was in a plane.

Dont bet on lasting for many years .Rain water kills them.The Ford parts book gives no info on a switch for the magneto.

Note that a worn key can be removed from the switch when its turned on.I have a key that does that.It could fall out while using the tractor.

Many years ago my Dad and I took the John deere H and a trailer out to the pasture to collect some stone for a project.Parked the rig on a slight down grade.We got a good load of stone on.Dad threw on a big stone, the H went chuff and it was off and running down the hill.I jumped on the trailer and steered the tractor onto a level spot.So you can start a John Deere with a stone.Never thought that a mag kill switch would generate so many posts.An old friend used to shut off his lawn mower with his thumb and finger when the spring shut off broke.You could try that to shut down the 9N if you could stand it .Beware of the crank.Repeated shocks from an ignition can make you pee in your pants.

My DC Case magneto has a kill switch on spring to magneto bolt and also a push-pull on dash. Starter doesn't have tranny safety lock, so have to make doubly sure, when "twisting her tail" with a crank, that lever clutch is disengaged and tranny out of gear.

I with you on this creating so many posts. The only reason I want to use a switch is so I can shut if off without getting off of the tractor. It has the shutoff button on the mag. It might be better to have it ground it out so that it would not start if the tractor rolled. Maybe a good reason to use parking brake rather than in gear. This an 8n with an industrial engine. Wico mag on it.

Id go with a Marine waterproof switch for that reason.They have a switch that boat owners use.it fastens to your clothing if you go over board and shuts down the engines.I posted that anyone who uses a bush hog should have one.I got jumped on bad over that idea.People have gone thru bush hogs.There are times when you need fast shut down.I keep my woods roads pretty clean but I have got a sapling into the fan.Nothing wrong with being safe around machinery.

i didn"t go to rocket sience class: but what i did was took a key switch off junk snow-blower, ran my mag wire to it, when key is off,mag is grounded dead, [doen't matter what type of tractor], regadless of starting system.

You must be one of the dummies that needs the hot stove warning.posters considered the problem and decided that a switch that kept the magneto points grounded would be best.
