magneto questions

I just pulled this off my 30 L. First time dealing with a magneto. I assume lever on front is on/off. Mine moves from 3 oclock to 5 oclock, but need to use some force. Not sure what metal strap from center screw to lower left screw is for. And do I need to get into it to service. And how can I bench test. Thanks for your help. Brian

The lever is the advance for the mag timing. When you want to stop the engine move lever towards retard and it grounds it to the post shown and kills the spark.

You can bench test by running a bare copper wite from the plug wire sockets. bend it to come about 1/4 inch from the metal frame. when you flip the impulse it should spark. If you have the cap off, secure the copper wite to the frame with a screw and make the spark gap to the center of the distributor gear. If you want to spin it without the impulse turn the mag upside down, and the dogs won't catch.
