Mahinda 4500

I'm working on my brothers tractor, a Mahindra 4500DI. He told me the power steering quit working, its very hard to turn. I changed the filter for the power steering fluid, turns little easier, but not much. The fluid is very dirty so I will drain and change. Can anyone give me any advice on what to do next. I am going to loosen both of the lines to the hydraulic cylinder to see if the fluid comes out under pressure. Thanks for any advice you can share.

I think you are on the right track.
A presume you checked the belts and hoses first.
Check the entire front end and steering linkages for physical damage.
Check the fluid level. It's critical.
When you drain the fluid you will need to change the filter again. It's a package deal.

is there a screen and a filter or just a filter? do you know what pressure you should have in the steering circuit and do you have a gauge to test it. Be careful about loosening and letting it fly under pressure some hydraulic systems run at incredibly high pressures and that cause serious damage to skin if you get in it's path. good luck

Might be as simple as greaseing it. I've had things get hard to steer in the past grease them then about a week later grease again and they would free up.

there is just a filter no screen, the power steering pump does not make any growling noise at all. Wondering of the pump is bad.
