Manifold Repair

Hi guys---got the manifold off today and found out that there were no washers under the brass nuts.....???

Archives mentions using lock washers only....Master Ford Parts Catalogue says flat washers.....

I would guess any washer is better than none, but what is preferred by those who have replaced manifold before, flat or lock washer?

Best part of this fix, was the studs remained in place, didn"t break off, and there was very little pitting to repair on the manifold, and no pitting on the block......both gaskets were pretty well shot and "blackening" the paint in about 3 spots...getting it fixed at the right time, eh?

Thanks, Tim

I used flat washers on new studs and brass nuts with a brand new manifold. One brass nut stripped due to extra casting flash that held the flat washe away and did not allow the nut onto the stud the whole way. Had to put a little English on the new manfold with a die grinder, before I could try a second time. Mebby that's why they call Asia the land of almost right. Moral of the story is - whan you use washers, be sure there is enough stud still remaining to take the full nut thread depth. Methinks also that uskng flat washers will somewhat change the torque readings but I'm not sure by how much.

Good Luck

If clearance is a problem, I would use a lock washer. Otherwise, flat washer is fine.

The washer is used to prevent the rough cast manifold from chewing up the softer brass nut.

Heat from the exhaust will likely cause a lock washer to lose its "spring" over time.

Don't forget to re-torque the manifold nuts after a few heat/cool cycles.

Thanks for all the replies.....I just put some Versa Chem "Inferno" on the few small pitted areas and will let cure for about 4hrs....supposed to withstand temps up to 2000 degrees and is sandable...

Picked up both flat and lock washers, but I believe there is not enough room so will use the lock washers....

Will use Permatex high temp copper gasket seal...and put it back together tomorrow...torqued at 27#.
