manifold update, success

I told my wife that I would either be successful or cost us $250.00 for a new manifold. I used the angle head grinder and cleaned up the epoxy and the manifold. Ran the tractor for ten minutes to get some heat and welded it in place with nickel. Got a good weld with good adherence to both the manifold and the pipe. I got to tell you that I was nervous about this. Thanks for the input and advice. You guys are the best. A special thanks to Don for the rods. Ellis

If this is where the pipe threads in there is zero chance of long term success.

Well I don't really want to start an argument, but I bought this tractor in 1984 and someone had done a very poor job of welding the exhaust pipe into the manifold and it lasted until this summer when I hit a tree limb. I have experience with cast welding and feel confident it will hold. Thanks for your comments. Ellis

exactly ... run the tractor to heat it up, as that's what i was thinking also. so what is the the take on all this brazing talk?? like to hear from a different weldor, as thats what welders tell me.

I have a similar issue . Dumb question- Did you weld with nickel rod ? I have a cracker box Lincoln-could I possibly do the same ?

I braze from time to time but I didn't want to do the exhaust pipe for a couple of reasons. Doing it on the tractor it seemed a little more difficult than stick welding because of using both hands and not being too stable. I like to support myself with one arm. If I had taken it off the tractor I might have brazed it. I don't think the heat from running the tractor would affect the braze. I think either application would work fine. Ellis

I did use nickel rod. Four of them because I couldn't use up a whole rod reaching under the steering shaft. I always save left over nickel. I'm not sure what
kind of Lincoln welder you have but you will need DC reverse. Ellis

If you got a Minneapolis Moline, U, or G,you have to weld them,if there not rusted out, sure it wont last long, but there are not many of them available,No New ones that i know of !
