my massey 4225 has to button to change between ,slow ans fast when gear it keeps jumping down from fast to slow any ideas whats wrong?

Does the button have a catch that is not holding or is it just a contact when depressed.

Welcome to the forums. A MF 4225 (1997-2001) is a bit newer than many of us here have been exposed to. The more explanation you can give, the better.

Is it an actual push button or a toggle switch?

Is the switch button/toggle actually moving on its own or just the circuit changing without the control moving?

Is this fast/slow button in a control handle, or where is it located?

It sounds like it is a transmission control, what transmission does it have?

What exactly does it control? Engine speed, gearing, hydraulic flow?

Have checked for loose and or dirty connections between the button and what it controls?

Check for loose ground wires in that circuit.


Do you have the service manual for your 4225?

Not familiar with a Massey. All 4 of my high/low machines are manually engaged. If it is just a contact, you need to figure out what it is actuating. Possibly a linkage somewhere that isn't fully engaging. Hopefully it isn't internal to the transmission. As Jim said, a manual would help.

To me this sounds similar in concept to the old MF Multipower, IH TA, Ford Dual Power, Oliver HydraPower. etc..

No idea what could be wrong. Could be electrical. Could be mechanical. The OP's vague description of the problem doesn't help. Not being there doesn't help. Massey Ferguson only making tractor models for a couple of years, then dropping the series and introducing something completely new doesn't help.

OP, under what conditions does it shift to low? When you're pulling hard, or...??? What do you do to shift it back to high? Push the button once... twice... or??? Any and all details about the behavior of the tractor with regards to this specific problem will be helpful.

And the MF 4225 parts book shows 8x2, 8x8, 12x4, 12x12, 18x6, and 24x24 as options for transmissions. Thus, my question of which transmission.

There's only one that's got the high/low shift from what I could see.

Supposedly the 18 x 6 has a button for fast/slow.

Regardless of which transmission, hopefully he has a manual because without one it is going to be hard to do much other that point out things he needs to look for. I have to believe we can agree that if this is a button mounted in a lever a bad button, broken wires, bad connectors, even a bad solenoid or valve depending on what the button operates are all possibilities.
