Massey 165 steering wobble

I have a friend that has a Massey 165 and he says that he can"t drive it on the road because the front wheels wobble so bad he can"t hold it in the road (power steering). He asked a mechanic about it and was told the bushings in the power steering part were worn and the tool to replace the bushings cost $500 you it would be pretty expensive. He doesn"t do the net so I"m trying to find out what I can. Anyone have any suggestions? Happy Trails, God Bless. John

I just had the caps off my MF35 power steering assist unit and found that they to were a little sloppy. I backed the adjustment screw out until I felt resistance in the steering wheel then turned them back in a scoshe. It took out some of the play but not all.
Another option which might work for you is find a 165 at a salvage yard and buy the 2 steering cap units used. Chances are they will send you out back to pull your own parts. Take the old ones you have now with you and compare them to the salvage ones you pull out. If the salvage ones are better buy em if not it costs you nothing but the time.
Obviously you are not in this for the money.

On my 165, just redoing all the rubber bits in the power steering cylinder with a seal kit was enough to take on-road travel from 'highly exciting' to 'manageable'.

For years we had serious steering wobble on various IH tractors (the last being a 444). They are not power steering but a mechanic said there should be almost no toe-in, if anything some toe-out. So my first step would be to reduce any toe-in - it had a dramatic improvement in our case. Ever since I can remember our old IH's had serious wobble on the roads and now there is no problem.

On MF 178"s especially the ones with the front weights in the wheels there was an anti-wobble kit available...this consisted i=of a handful of washers to replace the thrust bearings in the bottom of the stub axles. just removing the bearings and replacung them with the washers was often enough to cure the wobble you are talking about....providing of course everything else is in order. I take it the mechanic you spoke to was from a dealership....if that is correct the dealer should have the service tools in his workshop to carry out the fitting and reaming of the bushes....Regerds...Geoff

John....did your friend work out his wobble problem?

I've never had any wheel wobble on my 165, but it definitely wonders on the road. Haven't fixed it yet, but I suspect it may be partly the pin connection to the ps cylinder actuator valve, & partly the draglink balljoints are worn out.
