Massey 590 alternator

Hi.

I have a Massey Ferguson 590 needing its alternator re wiring.

Firstly, what size wire will I need. Also, I have some knowledge about tractor electrics but need some advice on where the wires go to and from.

Thanks

Hello Charlie, welcome to YT! Why does the alternator need rewiring? Factory wiring rarely gives a problem, but it stuff happens. With the information given all I can say is this. Most often the main lead to the alternator is fasten to a stud terminal on the back. If your tractor has a Cab with a heater or AC I suggest using a 8 gauge wire for that connection. If no cab a 10 gauge wire will be fine. I have no personal experience with your tractor model but looking up at all it looks like there’s also a plug in the back(4wire?). You should have the original wiring there to judge sizes for replacing that if it is needed. If you’re doing something like changing in the brand or type of alternator on it that should’ve been relayed to us right out of the gate.

Welcome to the forums.

Where in the wide world are you located? I ask as I don't find a 590 on the United States AGCO parts books. I do see it in the Great Britian parts books. Thus I am guessing you are not on our side of the pond. It looks like it possibly uses several different alternators. First thing is I think you will need to identify what alternator your tractor has. With some pictures we might be able to help with that, but no guarantee on that.

You should check with your MF dealer to see which manual has the wiring diagrams. Perhaps they will give you a copy of the wiring diagram if you ask.In the US the Operator Manuals often have the wiring diagrams. Perhaps you have an Operator's Manual and the wiring diagrams are not in it.

Hang in there, this site has a lot of members from around the world. Someone with a 590, or knowledge of them may see this and reply.

The info in the link is the extent of my knowledge specific to his machine. My uncle has a 396 and it is a Coventry built tractor, purchased in Kansas.. USA.

It is possible some 590s made it to the US, but the parts book for it is not available on the US site, that's why I asked. I checked after your post and the 396 (GRB) parts book is on the US AGCO site. I did find the AGCOpubs site shows some manuals for the 590. It will be interesting to see where he is located.

Hi guys, thanks for your help!

Apologies, i didn’t make it clear. My alternator is working fine, I just need to put it on my tractor and am unsure as to where the wires lead to.
I am in the uk.

Thanks For all your help.

Different alternators may call terminals by different names, and they may be in different locations. Thus, the need to know your alternator details. Iam not going to try guessing what your alternator is, has for terminals, or where wires go; to big a chance of smoking a good alternator. Are the old wires missing? If they are there, you should be able to figure out the wire gauges (sizes) and where they run to. There is generally a larger wire (4-6mm) with a ring terminal that goes on an alternator output terminal. The other wires will likely be 1.5-2.5mm and may use spade terminals. If you post a couple pictures of the alternator and the wire ends in the area of it, someone may recognize what you have.

I did find that the AGCOpubs site (AGCO's bookstore in the States) does show some 590 manuals. They offer downloads, I have no idea if they ship hard copies to the UK, you will need to call or email the bookstore to find out. Below is a link to the bookstore homepage and a couple clips of what they show for manuals. They are a third-party printer/distributor for AGCO. They should be able to help you confirm which manual has the wiring diagrams. I get both the Operator's Manual and the Service Manual for my Massey Fergusons as I use the online parts books. Your local AGCO/Massey dealer may be able to tell you that there is a similar AGCO bookstore in the UK.

Hope this helps.
