MASSEY 65 HYDRAULIC FLUID?

HI I JUST BOUGHT A MASSEY 65. NICE TRACTOR. I BOUGHT A SERVICE MANUAL, AND I GUESS I STILL DON,T UNDERSTAND THE FLUID SITUATION IN THE REAREND AND HYDRAULICS. DO YOU USE 80-90 IN THE TRANY HOLE BY THE SHIFTER AND IT WILL EVENTUALLY GET BACK TO THE DIP STICK UNDER THE LIFT LEVERS .. ONE BIG CAVITY?? BRAD

The manual probably specifies a GL-1 90 weight mineral oil. That is much lighter than 80-90 gear lube and gear lube should NOT be used.

Todays' modern oil used by Massey is Perma-Tran 821-XL. Up until last year or so it was Perma-Tran III, but as time moves on so do oil formulations. YOu have the fill point right, ands yes, it will show up on the dipstick. If it shows that it's at the add mark, it'll take about 1 gallon. Don't worry if you overfill it by a couple quarts either.

Like I said. DO NOT use regular gear lube. You could cause some damage to the pump, and if it gets cold it could get hard to shift.

One other note- Take the CAPS off. Reads like you're yelling.

Do not under any circumstances use a modern GL-5 category gear lube, but not just because of any viscosity differences. The additives (zinc I believe it is) will destroy the bronze bushings in your transmission. The GL-1 mineral oil does not contain these additives. I use the GL-1 mineral oil in the summer, but usually switch it over to the thinner Perma Tran in the winter.
