Massey Ferguson 175

I just bought this old Massey Ferguson 175 and I’m curious what is the purpose of this lever on the dash. Have not got to mess with the tractor a lot so I’m still just learning things about it.

You need to get an Operator's Manual for your 175. Here is a link to a MF 165 Operator's Manual you can download and save to use until you get the right one (The site is ok to download from). It tells about the Multipower and its use, which will be the same for the 175. A good bit of the other info will be the same as well.

First thing to be aware of is there is no engine braking when the Multi-Power is in Low, it will freewheel and can be very surprising.

The Multi-Power option doubles the six forward speeds to twelve, and two reverse to four. Shift it to low for easier shifting the main transmission, and High for engine braking going downhill. Best get a manual ASAP.

When in Multi Power high the tractor has a hill holding feature which is inherent in the Multi Power design. Always shift the Multi Power to low when shifting the gear transmission. This will relieve pressure on the gears. And yes, be aware that in low they will coast downhill.
