Massey ferguson 35 help

I recently purchased a Massey Ferguson 35 on an auction. From what I can figure by the S/N, it is a 1964 Standard gas version with multi power. I’m wondering if something was removed or bypassed? Not sure what is missing here.

Is it possible to remove or bypass it? The weird thing is I can feel something engage when I’m on a hill and push in the clutch. It holds the tractor in its position. Also high range and low range seem really far apart.

I believe the SGW means standard/utility chassis, gasoline engine, multipower transmission. 249676 would be a 1964 serial number.

Multipower is a hydraulic controlled gearing. High range of the multipower transmission will hold the tractor from rolling backwards if in a forward gear headed up hill or from rolling forward if backing up a hill. Low in multipower will freewheel going downhill in any gear. The high and low range with the short shift lever are mechanical gears so they are what they are. From your description someone removed the selector for the multipower, with it in high to prevent freewheeling downhill. To me the best answer is to restor the multipower control and learn to use it. The only way to safely bypass it would be to change to a regular transmission. I think low is aboout a 33% reduction from high in the multipower and it is shifted between them without using the clutch.

Do you have an Operator's manual for your MF35? It explains the multipower and use. As for the mechanical high-low ranges being far apart, you shift 1-3 in low then 1-3 in high. Info on that should be in the Operator's manual as well.

I wonder if the parts to restore the multi power are still available? I haven’t even been able to locate any pictures of what is missing.

They should be. Worst case you might need to source them used.

Do you have a service manual for your 35?

In the future you might get better responses if you post your MF questions down below in the Massey Harris and Masey Ferguson discussion Forum that is here in the Manufacturers section.

You can use the online parts book at AGCOparts.com. If it works the first link is to the MF35 parts book there the Multipower linkage is on page 150 (left side index). (The MF publication number is 651093)

Below are a couple online manual you can check out. Unfortunately, they don't show details of the linkage. I don't have a 35 to get pictures from. Hopefully someone will be along with pictures of their MF35 tractor's Multipower linkage.

A Massey Ferguson 35 Operator's manual

What is your general location?

Thanks for all your help!
Pay attention to section J13 of the link that Jim posted......Massey Ferguson 35 Service manual......
The Multi power Transmission is NOT as strait forward as the Standard 6 speed Transmission...
Are you aware, there are both single clutch as well as dual clutch 6 speed transmissions .......as well as a 6 speed Transmission with Multi power .......

I will have to get the service manual. From what I’ve read on this and other forums is that going by the serial number it should have multi power. I’ve only had the tractor for a couple of days so I’m still figuring it out.

The serial number indicates multipower. Your description of it not rolling backwards if you disengage the clutch when headed up a hill is what a MF with the Multipower in High will do. I have to believe that someone removed the shift lever and maybe some of the linkage. They may have locked in Hi due to a problem with the low side of the Multipower, or just to prevent the downhill runaway if one forgets to shift into high when heading down hill. There is no engine holdback through the transmission in Low Multipower.
