(quoted from post at 13:33:32 12/25/21) Did the 35 utility have problems with the rear ends going bad ...

Our MF 35 'Loader Tractor' was an industrial yellow with bucket and backhoe my father brought home from an auction in the late '70s. He wouldn't have paid much for it, he just didn't. It was a mosquito smoker-oil burner and peeled the teeth off the ring gear. I'm not sure if there was rear end noise or if my father knew the rear end condition when he got it (I assume it showed problems at the auction and he got it cheap). But I do remember he had it open fairly soon after bringing it home and went over the gear situation with the heavy construction mechanic friend of the family for advice on it. Something like 2/3rds of the teeth were chipped off the ring, probably fatigue and could have been heat treat or machining stress risers, but I was just a kid then. He bought a new rear end gear set and and it never had a problem for us. The cost of that gear set was a lot in '70s farmer dollars, and I remember his comments about that. Eventually he rebuilt the motor so it didn't burn oil either. He used that tractor quite a lot around the farm.

Sir:
I'm Unable able to address your specific concerns........ haefs

However....My parents purchased a NEW 1963 MF 6 speed dual Clutch..No independent PTO with a DIFFERENTIAL LOCK...
Installed a LOADER on the poor little bugger....
As the engine hours passed by the CAP SCREWS that held the RING GEAR to the DIFF assemble failed..
Their three sons had NEVER BEEN taught the proper time to engage the DIFF LOCK..!!
SHOCK loading caused the CAP SCREWS to fail.

The above was discovered when I was asked to remove the left AXEL HOUSING and replace a Brocken lower three point lift PIN.

Also....
NOTE*
Our Neighbour had a DIFFERENTIAL FAIL...MF 35 6 speed...
He had allowed the OIL SUMP to fill with water ....
Water froze.....
I believe the result was he destroying of components as per picture..
I believe MF never designed any weak parts in the MF 35 Differential..
I do believe OWNERS and operates caused their own problems..
The rest is self-explanatory..
Retired Power Engineer ...NO guaranties implied

Bob..Owner 1963 MF 35 X 6 speed..

No never really was the crown and pinion a fault with them but more so the hydraulic lift cover would crack from the pressure relief valve sticking in the hydraulic pump and cause a force of oil to crack the hydraulic lift head all around front along the cylinder and ring studs. Many times it would crack in several pieces and they would fall into the rear end along with bits of bolts. When the lift head would be replaced some of these pieces would be missed and over time circulate to the rear end of the houseing and jam in the crown gearing and cause problems.
