Massey Ferguson 451 - Running Issues

Hello, I have a Massey Ferguson 451 with 760 hours that won't run for longer than 5-10 minutes. The tractor will start and run fine for 5-10 minutes, but then dies out of nowhere. When it dies, there's no sign of electric function, almost like you shut the key off. It just started doing this out of no where. When it dies, you can hit the key and the motor will turn over, but the tractor won't start. It's not until you try it a few times/give it a minute or two that the tractor will actually start and run again. 5-10 minutes later, it dies again. I've replaced the fuel filter and the problem persists. Any thoughts on what could be the issue? Thanks in advance for any thoughts/advice.

May not be your issue but I had a similar problem with my JD410 backhoe loader. Sent the injector pump out and the tech found that the fuel shut off solenoid was defective.

Thanks for the follow up! The issues started a bit ago. My first thought was possibly clogged fuel filter, so I changed that out, using Wix filter. Same issue with new filter as with old filter. I have not checked/dove into the injector pump, but will keep this in mind as I work through it.

May be a silly question but did you try bleeding the air from the system? Not familiar with that particular engine but does it have a lift pump like the older 153's?

Hi Rockpeg,

Thanks for the follow up. The tractor does have a lift pump,
though not quite the same orientation as the older tractors.
Going to try bleeding/checking the various fuel lines and lift
pump in the next day or two.

Going to apologize for the time/sequence on the replies - I
believe my timezone is messed up in my settings.

I too have a 451 with a similar problem and am suspecting the solenoid after replacing filters, blowing out lines, etc. Check the electrical connector on the fuel pump. Mine had somehow lost its retaining clip and it only has to lift by a 16th or so to break contact.

Hi Dan,

I'm thinking it's got to be something electrical on mine. I've done the same (new filters, cleaned filter bowl, cleaned/checked lines, etc.). I'm going to check the electrical connections on the fuel pump and go from there. Is there any good way to check the solenoid?
