Massey Ferguson sickle mower

I just bought a 3pt 7'bar MF mower,I'm not sure what model, the id taq is blank on that part. The serial # does start out 238, or was it 283? ----- I know it needs a sickle guard and a little grease etc. The belt is in good condition, it needs a swathboard, over all it doesn't look bad for a 300 dollar mower. Is there anything I should be on the look out for? I've never had a MF piece of equipement before, so any help or ideas would be appreciated.

If it is like the one I had years ago make sure the brake away safety thing works well and is kept greased up. The one on mine did not pop free like it should have and broke the bar mount part which to replace was $350 new back 10 years ago

I just had one of these given to me. Guess I am lucky cause didn't figure it was worth much more than 100 bucks. Only thing wrong that I can see is broken sickle and previous owner gave me another one of them.

Hi, Ironically 4 models start out with 238 before
the s/n. If it has short belts and it is a pitman
drive it is a 32 or 42. If it has the dynabalance
drive with the long belt, it is a 31 or 41. If a
dynabalance do not overgrease the "head" or parts
will fly. Lube by the manual. They came new w/o
zerks so they would not get overgreased both in
frequency and amount of grease. The 31 and 41 are
excellent mowers depending on care. If the sickle
is broke,it probably needs hold downs and plates
under the sickle to take the play out. Chuck

If the Dyna-balance box is cast in one piece, it is a 31, made by MF in Canada. If the Dyna-balance box is fabricated with welded steel, it is a 41 (newer model, made by Vermeer for MF).

Thanks for the replys guys. From reading your posts I've figured out I have a 31, it has a long belt and the head is cast. Its good to know about greasing the head to much will cause problems. Thanks for the help!!
