massey super 90 the pto lever under the seat does not hold in gear the pto works fine but the lever slides out of engagement if you hold it in gear it works fine there does not appear to have a dedent the lever feels slack on the engine pto side
the ground speed does have a positive notch as you put it in gear and it stays in gear any help appreciated

There's a spring loaded detent ball in the case that works against the lever, if the lever depression where the ball enter is full of dirt or the ball is missing would be my guess why it won't stay put..

Hi, in addition to Dieseltech's comments, is the lever loose on the spindle? If it is it will reduce the pressure of the detent spring on the ball and consequently its ability to remain engaged. Another worst case possibility is that after years of possible 'crashing' into gear that the pto and pinion gears may be badly worn and have a tendency to fly apart when any load is applied. This may be in addition to the detent weakness.

As diesel said the ball and spring are most likely full of dirt and seized. There are grooves on the rear of the plate where the ball holds on. The live PTO grove is
probably worn some too so it will not hold, with the stuck ball. The ground drive, because it is not used much will have an unworn groove, so will hold. Bad news is you
will have to split the tractor to fix. Not hard to fix once you are in there though. A new spring and ball will probably fix you up even though the grooves are worn some.
I have done a few of these fixes, and it is always the same....dirty spring and ball.

thanks for the replies they are appreciated it looks like i will have to make some kind of clip to hold the pto in gear as its not used much and i dont fancy spitting the tractor for such a small fault i have thought about drilling the pto lever and fitting a ball and spring externally but not sure it would work ??
