I have just acquired an 1155 Massey that has been sitting for 3.5 to 4 years. I went to pick it up today and have had a little trouble. I put both batteries on and tried to spin it over, the starter acted like the batteries are dead and the got one so hot it melted the lead spin on cable adapters. Got all that stopped, the engine sounded like it spun over once but I am not sure. I got all the connections cleaned on the batteries as well as the ground on the starter. Put it all back together and the starter sounded again like the batteries are dead. The motor would not spin over, I could not spin it over by hand either. I put the tractor in gear, hooked my truck to the front and gave it a couple of tugs, the rear wheel would move very little but the engine would not budge. The antifreeze is good so I dont believe it froze and seized the engine over the winter, the fella that had it had just finished disking and parked it and it has been sitting since. Can these tractor be pulled started? I think the batter that got hot is bad now, it melted the plastic around the terminals so I am gonna go have it tested, what I am really scared of is the motor being stuck. ANY advice or input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Maybe I am missing something else.Did you clean both ends of the cables? Sounds more like a dead short to melt the terminal. Are the cables hooked up right?

before you assume the motor is stuck you might loosen the starter and see if the drive is stuck in the flywheel. this has happened to me when a battery doesn't turn the starter over strong enough to turn the motor. this will lock up nreal wheels if tractor is in gear.out of gear you should be able to turn motor manually.

Those starters were known for solenoid issues. They use a large copper washer inside that would pit and corrode with burn marks from arcing. You might need to take the starter to a shop and have it checked. They also require a solid connection at the brushes.

Oh, the multi power tractors can NOT be pulled to start.

The terminal are hooked up right, I have done that before on a tractor that had the same color cables and I was in a hurry. I did clean both ends of the cable and then put it back together. I have had the terminals on a large truck melt like that once over a bad connection, it was trying to pull all the amps from one battery and cooked it. I dont know if I have the same thing here or not. I will take the starter out of it tommorow after I get another battery to replace the cooked one.
