I keep seeing reprints of the Deere Master Part Index on ePay and they are always listed as material that is in the public domain. Anybody know what part of the public domain it is in? I would like to download a copy without paying somebody on ePay to do it for me. I have looked at every manual on Deere's site that I can find that is downloadable. (word?)

You won't find the MPI except on paper & that will cost you. The gentleman on ebay who sell's the reprint's purchased the origonal manual's, copied them & then sold the origonal's on ebay. They brought quite a bit more than the reprint's he now sell's.

I was under the impression that "in the public domain" meant it was available somewhere for free. For instance, people sell reprints of the John Deere Unstyled B parts catalog (and others) on eBay and list them as "in the public domain"; I thought that was because we all know you can download it for free at JD. Just a CYA tactic???

When something is in "Public Domain" that means that there is no copyright or the copyright holders rights have expired or no longer exist for whatever reason. In a nutshell, it means that no one owns the copyright and anyone can use it/copy it/sell it. It's public property.

The legal definition:
public domain n. 1) in copyright law, the right of anyone to use literature, music or other previously copyrighted materials, after the copyright period has expired. Although the copyright laws have changed several times, a rule of thumb would be that the last possible date for copyright protection would be 50 years after the death of the author. Thus, the works of William Shakespeare, Mark Twain, Jack London, and other classic writers are in the public domain and may be published by anyone without payment of a royalty. 2) all lands and waters owned by federal, state and local governments
