McCormick Deering 8ft grain drill

So I just recently purchased a McCormick Deering 8ft grain drill that
is trip type lower. I can?t seem to raise it? Can anybody give me
some guide as to how I raise it? I am sure there is a clutch to it so
does the grain drill need to move to reset so I can lift it again?
Something isn?t working and it?s probably user error.

These machines were built before the days of hydraulics and power everything. You need to drive it forward while pulling on the trip rope and the clutch will catch and raise the drill.

I figured that was the issue wasn?t sure... do you know what model this is if I describe it... it has the grass seed box up front, then it has the grain seed, then it has the fertilizer box. It?s about 8ft or 10ft long. Just wanting to get the right manual. Thanks again for the help

I'll add to what John stated while drill is moving forward after clutch has engaged ""one needs to release rope in timely manner"" so clutch will disengage to lock disks in fully lowered or raised position.

With fertilixer box it is an MF, with no fertilizer it would be a M. Late 40's to into 50's. Don't know what year next model came out. Had a 13-7 MF for years untill wore out.

Hi, years ago my brother had one like that and eventually it would not raise by pulling the rope and it was up at the other farm so we had to take tools up there and work on it.
The problem was the drive gear on the axle that was engaged by the trip rope was not mating with the driven gear. We applied the farmer fix by putting a round or two of fencing wire behind the drive gear on the axle to push it over to engage the driven gear. It operated that way for many years until he upgraded to 3pt version with the tail wheel.

To get width just multiply the number of openers times spacing of openers. This is the way the drills were measured. A 13-7 drill had a working wodth of 91", a 12-8 drill had a working width of 96" while a 15-7 has a working width of 105", now devide those figures by 12" to get size of drill in feet. The 12-8 would be an actuall working width of 8'.
