MD overhaul kit source

In the process of getting a family owned MD from my uncles estate. Would like to start restoration this winter. It has been in a shed and has been running in the last 5 years then put back away. Im not sure what all I will need to get it up and going correctly. Wondering where you guys have found parts for them. I was researching overhaul kits this morning and didnt come up with anything.

My plan is to tinker and see how it runs first obviously and I know they are expensive to work on. Just wanted to have some resources found ahead of time if I need to do any work deeper in the engine. Thanks!

Why do you think it may need an overhaul?Get it running good first,run it a while to determine condition.If the engine turns out to
be stuck,it will definitely need an OH.I would be more concerned about the head being cracked.OH /S&P kits are EXPENCIVE,hrd to
find,but are out here.Good luck with your uncles tractor.Go ahead and buy it,even if it needs an OH and it takes 5 years to gather
up parts,you wont be sorry. Those gas start diesels are a lot of fun. Family tractors are special. I worked on my F20 for over 3
years. Then had to wait 12 years to buy it back. It was definitely worth the wait.Go for it!

I just went through the same thing with a WD9 that had sat on the side of a mountain at 9500 ft elevation for 50 years.Drain the old gas and diesel out.Drain the filters.Look for rust,etc. Add fresh clean fuel and bleed eerything.I didn't even change filters or add antifreeze till I was sure it would fire/run.Acctually,it started right away, ran like it had run last month. Once it started,I changed oil,filters,added coolant,etc,etc.That's all it took.I have a good running,easy starting tractor.Only issue is after it ran a while is the carb started flooding. A new float,needle and seat fixed that.Hopefully,you will have the same(or better) luck with your's.

The sad part about them is that there has been no NEW parts made for that engine in over 40 years an all that is left is what is layen on some dusty old shelf some where . When they were still in use they were a neat old tractor sipped fuel and got the job done , a pain sometimes and you never wanted to be in a hurry with them . They needed warm up time and extended cool down . I had a S/MD and a 450 D back many moons ago , my first introduction in the art of tractor repair . I bought it off a guy that jockeyed tractors for 950 bucks as it had a miss until ya put a load on it and it would smooth out . Not only did it miss it would also back fire . After having the local guru on I H tractors come out after work on a Saturday and look and listen he told me that OH YOU HAVE A Cracked head . So Monday i priced a NEW HEAD and a NEW head back then was 650 bucks . The following weekend i tore into it and pulled the head and took it in to be tested and repaired if they could . Due to a leaking valve cover gskt i did not notice that it was a new head . My friend at the machine shop called me and informed me that hey thats a new head and it tested out fine and we just dusted the valves and it is ready to go back on . Back then you could get the gskt sets from ANY parts store . The next week end after buying a NEW torque wrench i put it back together and guess what it still missed , back fired snorted and throw fire out the pipe . So now what where do i go NOW . My one buddy had a 450 D and his ran perfect SO first we swapped injectors and no joy there , then we swapped pumps , NOw his missed , back fired and shot flame out the pipe. So the pump was the problem , first place i took it told me back then in 69 that it was going to cost 650 bucks and they had to order all kinds of part . Well i waited and waited and they kept telling me they were WAITING on parts . So i took the pump back and went looking for someone else to repair my pump . I found the man at the local I H construction dealership Dropped it off Monday morning on the way to work and at 11:30 he called me and said my Pump was done and i owed 112.78 . When i paid the biLL before they changed there mind and the Pump was in the trunk of my car i told old Cal what Ohio Diesel told me , old Cal said they LIED to you and the only thing your pump needed was one seal and two bushing due to the seal being out and flooding the crank case with fuel because the seal was out . He also tweaked the pump as i had told him that i planed to PLAY with this tractor along with Farm with it , He changed the gov. weights and springs , changed out the plunger and put a plunger for a T D14 in it to give it a weeeee bit more fuel ground the case to allow the rack to come back more for MORE RPMs and also marked the one screw so i could ADJUST the fuel from a STOCK +10% to Holey Crap why are the skeeters all dead and day has turned into midnight . And all this for a 112.78 cents . Plus all the fun we had with that old tractor . The two times the fire Dept was call or fires that there was no fire just the 450 doing her thing . one early May day my buddy and i were both plowing in a thirty acre field surrounded by woods back in about a 1/4 mile off the township road and he and had the wicks turned up and the black smoke was bellowing way up above the tree tops and some good citizen called in a forest fire , two brush trucks showed up from two different dept. only to find two 450 D plowing with two sets of 540 semi mounts with straight pipes and radios cranked up so you had a stereo affect and the fire dept was called when i was helping another farmer fill silo we had my 450 on the blower blowing haylage up and 80 footer behind the barn , three trucks showed up for that one . Had the county mounty called on us for loud music , One evening my buddy and i went to the local watering hole to do a little FOX hunting and it was a dead evening for foxes and after getting pretty much PLOWED he and came up with this idea to go finish up then four hillside contour strips . So off to the farm and light up the 450's and get with it He and i had radio mounted on the steering shaft ahead of the steering wheels and he and got our favort station all tuned in and off he and i went , this valley was the head waters of the Mahoning river and on a still spring evening with 2 450's with straight pipes that were cranked up so does the radio to hear it . We both had a snoot full but we were having fun . Around 2:30 in the morning as i was coming up on the head land at the west end of the one strip i see a car go past slowly but could not tell what it was because it was down on the road below the bank level , it goes down the road and turns around and come back and stops as i get to the end and raise the plows to make my turn here come Deputy Dog up the bank and i stop and get off the tractor and stagger on over . We know this guy he is ok . And i get I SHOULD HAVE KNOWEN IT WAS YOU TWO , Look i don't care if you two want farm all night and all day BUT the natives down at the Lake ( five miles away ) are complaining about a wild party and load engines running . And put mufflers on or turn down the radios , Well gee Howard if we turn down the radios then we can't hear them over the tractors and if we put muffler on we just burn them out , buy now my buddy is come up and you could see the bright glow off the pipe and the foot of fire out the top of the pipe . At least at night ya could not see the smoke and for some reason we never had a problem with skeeters while farming at night even down by the swamp.

A stuck engine does not necessarily require an overhaul, it might not be optimum, but depending on how much rust might work fine. If needing overhaul, cloned pistons can be made, I do not know if lower end is same as M. I would investigate the issues, figure how much it is worth to you, then we can help. There are a lot of unknowns.

I would definitely not do an overhaul unless needed and willing to spend a lot.

Thank you, Yes I agree. I’m not planning on doing an overhaul unless it would happen to need it. Just trying to do some parts searching ahead of time and wasn’t coming up with any sources on new engine parts. More than anything just trying to do my homework. I’ve rebuilt several gas M’s before and it’s so easy to find new parts. The MD list on these suppliers pages is very short. More curious if you guys knew of anyone manufacturing new engine parts for an MD.

Check with Carr Machine they have a lot
of parts for the gas start engines. There
also is a welding shop in Cambridge that
can repair the heads. Carr Machine
advertised in Red Power mag.

There are no interchangeable parts. The engine has 5 main bearings and its only place of commonality is the engine to torque tube bolt pattern. Jim

need them. Really cool how Carr vintage parts, webers
tractor works, and others are keeping them going.
