mechanical interlock starter switch

I have tried everything short of removing the steering pedistal. The plunger or rod to accually press the starter switch does not seem to be the problem. It moves freely and does not seem to be hanging up on anything, the push button on the trany cover seems to be okay. I don't know how to measure the range of motion but that is my next question? How much should the rod move in the steering housing. i'm not sure how this worked one night and two days later nothing. has anybody had this trouble before? Thanks- Digger

Steering pedistal? Is this a 9n / 2n?

If so, then you may have wear in the linkage that moves the jiggle stick... One of your previous messages didn't state what tractor you had so i guessed 8n.

Sinc ethe 8n use a drastically different starter switch setup vs the 9n/2n.. you REALLY REALLY REALLY need to tell us what you have when you make a post.. don't make us guess or remember previous posts where you talked about it..

Now.. if you have a steering pedistal.. I'd say you got a 2n or 9n...

refer to an exploded digram to see how the push button switch hits the jiggle switch, that hits the start switch up front.

if that ain't what you go.. then tell us... onle one of us here is a mind reader.. and he ain't here at the moment!

ouNdguy, I think we had him covered....I guessed 9/2N and you guessed 8N & we each responded accordingly.

As explained yesterday- I have gone over the diagram, as asked today, how do you know it is worn? how much movment should there be in the rod? how does it come apart(not in I&T)? By the way, It is not listed as a mechanical interlock for the 8N's... at least not in my I&T manual!

I know for a fact if you have to werk on the linkage the lower steering housing has got to come off,,, I spec the travel of the push rod will B 1/2" to 3/4",,, the rod has a cotter pin to limit travel,,,, mite as well git the shifter cover off to find whats broke,,, several parts under the cover are know to break

It realy helps when poster ID what machine they are working in , in the post that they ask the question.

Digger:

I had a similar problem with my 2N starter button about a year ago. Turned out that I didn't realize that there was supposed to be a washer attached to the rod coming out of the bottom of the button that was the part that actually moved the rocker to actuate the rod going to the starter switch. Pull the button out, then take a screwdriver & push the curved fork just inside the cover. If that moves the rod and actuates the starter switch, then it is likley that the washer on the button is broke.

First- Thanks, this is by far the screweyest and frustrating thing i have worked on to date. in 12 years of restoring N's this is the first time i have had this much trouble with something this simple. I have removed the plunger from the trany cover and pushed on the wishbone, it doesn"t activate the starter switch but the rod does move and does not seem to be sticking or binding. tonight i am going to see how much travel is in the rod and how much travel in the starter switch before engauging. I"ll report back! thanks! Digger

Someone out there knows the answer to this: If you try to use the similar looking dash mounted switch, would it bolt up and cause this problem?

the dash starter (SN 12499 and below) does not match up bolt pattern on the steering pedistal. I have a spare one and that is what i have been using to start her with lately. i do believe your right somebody has experienced this, they just need to read all this. I wonder if the rod that activates the switch isn't mushroomed a little on the ends. I know more tonight! hopefully! thanks- digger
