I posted this in the ads, but I thought some may be curious to see it. It's the only one I've seen. It bolted to the back of our old JD A, and ran off a belt drive from the pto (used to have a chain) to use on tractors that had no power-trol lift. We later traded for a newer A and this has not been used for 40+ years (got rid of the cultivators too) so it would need a little loosening up if someone wanted it. We would shut off the pto at the start of a long row and kick it back in (no live pto here)when approaching the next turnaround. One advantage to this one over the power-trol was you could pick up left or right side independently or both together. We are having an auction to sell a lot of my Dad's old equip and it was time to dig this out of the garden fence.

If you had to turn the PTO on and off something was wrong with that unit. You kept the pto on all the time and it has what is like the clutch lift on a plow that triped to raise and lower the cultivators. Probably same parts used. I can see both clutches on there in your picture. The valubable part tho is the cast pto cover that you got rid of when putting that belt on.

we just shut it off to save the springs and the shaft from constantly turning.

I've got one. They were originally chain driven.

My grandfather had one; I think my cousin still has it. It was marketed as a way to have independent control (either side) for front mount cultivators.

Would not have wore it out by not doing that, you did more harm to tractor doing that than you saved on wear on the lift.

It was for a way to have something other than hand (armstrong) lift for tractors that were sold without the hydrolick lift. And most were sold for the hand lift cultivators but when the owner could no longer do that it was a way to get around buying the hydrolic lift and having it installed and was a lot cheaper as the tractor owner could bolt it up but the power hydrolick lift you had to send to dealer to do as the farmers at that time did not have shop capabilities to do that kind of work.
