This tach is in a JD 410 backhoe but I would figured it is relevant to all tractors.
I have a mechanical tach that is dead. Took the dash apart, cable to the tach is spinning and will continue spinning with resistance from my fingers.
Looking at the back of the tach where the cable screws into it looked to me as if the hole that the spinning part of the cable goes into was too large to do any good. In my wisdom it looked like something was missing. I made up a rubber plug to go into this hole allowing the spinning cable to fit into it and thus spin the tach.
The needle did spin but not the way I would of thought. While screwing the cable in the needle would start to spin slowly and when the cable is tightened all the way the tach is saying like 6k and pegged. No variation at all as you step on the throttle.
At first I thought the tach was bad. Other day I was in a buddy's barn that had a lot of old car parts. Hanging there were a bunch of similar mechanical tachs for cars. Looking at the back of these tachs I noticed that they all had the same large opening (the one I had tried to plug up) where the spinning part goes into..
So it made me wonder (that and JD wants $580 for a replacement) that my tach might not be bad.
Could it be possible that the spinning part of the cable needs to go into the back of the tach further than mine is? Currently the spinning part only stands proud of the outer screw by about 1/8th of an inch...if that. It does look like the end is ok, square and all and not worn off and I have no clue what the other end looks like or where it even ends.
Any ideas?
Thanks
