Mechanical Transplanter Model 85

Is any one out there using one of these model 85 plastic layers?

I'm having a problem when there is any variation in the ground the shoes that cover the edge of the plastic don't work.

The ground is relatively level and freshly tilled.

I am considering extending the shoes to help with this but I can't help but wonder if it's operator error

The only way that I can see to cure it would be to remount the shoes on an arm pivoted close to the rear tire. A spring could give it more down pressure if needed.
