melted battery cable

the negative battery cable melted on my ford 2000.The battery cable and battery was to hot to touch. After letting it cool down i treid to reattach and the battery cable instantly stuck and started melting again. What is wrong?

What do you think it means.. current is flowing.. lots of it.. that entails a short.

My first guess would be a stuck cutout relay on a vr for a gen.. or a short in a alternator.. or a stuck/shorted starter solenoid.

put a test lamp inline with your cable and the battery.. it should lite up. Now, one by one, disconnect the arm wire from the gen, or the charge wire tot he alternator..then the wire to the solenoid ( battery side ). when the lamp goes out.. you found where the problem is.

look for shorted positive cable between the gas tank and the battery tray. the smaller of the two cables is the one to melt.

Check the other battery cable. Don't know which 2000 you have, but if it's the 4 cyl type, the other cable could have rubbed through on it's way down to the selonoid.
I think I would pull the battery and check the other side of the battery box. Then the cable to the selonoid.

If it's a 3 banger, look for a shorted positive in the area of the battery tray pivot, near the fuel tank.
I'd replace both for some rather cheap insurance.
