messed up electric needs some help 840

Got this old non runner. The electric was butchered and done wrong in so many ways I am starting over. I have read many threads and looked at a bunch of diagrams but am still scratching my head. Part of the confusion is it is a 12v conversion and the way the alt is wired is different than the diagrams. The thick battery line runs to the battery, but the #1 and #2 are spliced together. Every diagram I see has one of the smaller wires spliced into the bat terminal.

Also, I just have such a basic question I have found no answer. How do you wire the points. Where does the wire running from the coil to the dist hook up in the dist. and where does the resistor's wire hook up?

This thing has never run since I have had it and I would love to see it start this week.
Thanks

charge stud on alt to the hot side of the start solenoid.

#2 to charge terminal. #1 thru a 194 lamp to the switched side of the key. from that same side run a wire to your coil ( use a real 12v coil like a napa ic14sb )... if you choose to use the 6v coil, add a dropping ressitor in that line... from there hook to t he primary of the coil+.. from the coil primary - hook to the feedthru insulated stud on the distrib.. that where power passes to the points.. gap points at .025 plugs too.

Thaks

So the wiring on the alt as it is pictured is wrong? Also, if I read your reply right, the terminal on the points connects to the small coil wire entering the dist and the resistor in the dist? What do I keep reading about just cutting one of the small gray wires ane leaving it be or feeding it back. I should have pictured it, but my solenoid has 2 big terminals and just one small one. Is that the right solenoid?

This is not how we normaly tell people to hook up the wires because it is much eaiser to just hook the looped back wire to the battery post on the alternator BUT your wire hook up will work just fine.
The large blue wire gets hooked to the same post as the battery hooks to on the starter relay.
The small grey (long) wire gets a one way diode hooked in line and runs to the switched side of the terminal block.

Run a wire from the - neg side of the coil threw the black rubber piece under the points. Hook this wire and the condensor to the nut on the points.
If you are using the stock 6 volt coil you will need to add a 12 volt to 6 volt voltage dropping resistor in the wire from the terminal block to the + pos side of the coil. You are trying to protect the coil from getting 12 volts.

You can use your 6 volt coil with out this resistor for a very short while if you want to test to see if the engine runs before spending more money.
You also do not need to hook up the alternator to test run the motor.

it's not how I would do it, as it makes sense draw off the regulator circuit, and the regulator circuit is printed foil.. any faults and it can smoke... plus the wire going back needs to go thru a marker lamp or diode before it hits the switch... if it's wired like that it should work.

oem 8n solenoid is 3 terminal.

Running!!! Thanks guys. Some rough going today due to defective points even though they were new. Seems to run pretty good.
