metal drill bits

Folks,

I am in need of a good set of metal drill bits, and wanted to determine a brand that really works. I have about 12-14 different sizes of flange shafts to extract from their threads to where the head of the bolts are broken-off, 90% of them flush with the motor mounts...no room to weld anything to what remains.

Greenfield or Dormeyer are as good as you can get. Get high speed steel bits, not carbide. If you get carbide, you'll need a diamond grinding wheel to sharpen them. Selecting the right speed, using the right lubricant, and keeping them sharpened right is the best way to increase the life of the bits. rw.

Irwin, Cleveland twist drill, Hertel. Be sure to get HSS, or High Speed Steel.

I only use Dormer (split point) cobalt drill bits. They cut better and last a lot longer than high speed steel bits

I buy quite a bit from McMaster-Carr, but I also buy a lot of stuff from ENCO. They will show me the cheapie Harbor Freight type drill sets as well as the $300 sets, and then I can choose. FWIW, if you order from Enco, google up "ENCO free shipping, and odds are that you will get a hit for a promo code that someone listed. Add this in the block on your order and you get free shipping on orders of $50 or more. On this order, it was $10.00. I just ordered a split tip cobalt set up to 1/2" jobber lengths in 1/64" increments for $80, USA made. (They held up very well). They also had a nice HSS set for substantially less money, but I thought that I would try some cobalts. They sharpen up nice on a fresh Drill doctor, too.

I got a set of carbide coated bits from northern tool and have had great luck with them so far. The set I bought has Fractional sizes, and machinist letter and number sizes also. Being a $100 set with that many bits it also came with a bunch of extras in common sizes. For occasional use in my case the work great.
