MF 135 pto problem

Hello everyone.
This is my cousins story:

I have a 1972 Massey Ferguson 135 Deluxe, with a gas engine. I was spreading manure with it one day and when the spreader was empty, as I was going down a hill, I pushed in the clutch and disengaged the pto from "engine" to "neutral", then, as soon as I released the pto clutch, my engine died and I came to a halt.
If the clutch is pressed as far as it will go, the tractor will start but as soon as I release the (pto) clutch, it kills the engine. The transmission will shift in and out of all gears and the tractor will roll freely in neutral without pressing the clutch. The pto lever shifts easily from neutral to ground and from neutral to engine with the tractor not running, I am wondering if it is shifting a little too easily?.

I know that something needs fixin" but I am not sure where I should start, and should I use a sledge hammer? I would appreciate any help I can get and have a Happy New Year.
Thanks
David

I would guess that something failed in the shift mechanism that connects the PTO shaft from the driveshaft (groundspeed) and the PTO pump output. I would say that both are engaged causing the issue. IE PTO is trying to drive the rear wheels at engine speed... Try draining the fluid level down and pulling the left side cover where the PTO shifter us. If the fluid level is low enough, you should be able see the issue.

I had to fix a 202 Workbull PTO this summer, would not engage, drained about 4 gals of oil out of the trany, jacked drivers side rear wheel way up and pulled the PTO lever cover off, fairly easy job

inside of the PTO lever has a finger that goes down and rides in a groove on a sliding coupler tube, in neutral the finger holds that tube in-between the PTO engine and the ground positions, the finger slides the tube forward or backward to engage the PTO

with the cover off you should be able to reach down in the goop and slide that tube by hand, turn PTO shaft to check if it is free

in my case, the lever finger was out of the groove, suspect the lever had been mis-inserted when they cleaned the trany filter

I don't think the coupler is long enuf to engage both positions at once, suspect you have piece of metal jammed somewhere in the PTO driveline or locked up bearing

RTV blue works fine to reseal the cover
