Mf 135 water in engine oil.

My mf 135, 3 cyl diesel, serial No. F 49795. Engine No. 2387237. Centre tractor in photo.
When I checked the engine oil found it to be well above the indicator and coloured grey. I assume this is water. Tractor only does light duty hauling fruit bin trailers, didnt overheat. Any ideas on where to start looking for the problem before I start? Im thinking head gasket, liners or water pump backing plate.
My mechanic estimates 15K to recondition the lot, 0.5 K to run a sealant through it, part it out, or repower for 7K with an Indian copy long motor..
Id appreciate any thoughts. Pete.

How did you get from some water in the oil to 15K to recondition 3 tractors? That feels like a big jump.

I gotta believe that getting the leak fixed/rebuilt has gotta be cheaper than dropping a new engine in there, and from what everyone seems to think of the Perkins, you're never going to do better than what you've already got.

Did the FUEL start disappearing......and yes a FUEL lift / Transfer pump can fail / become faulty and dump DIESEL into
the Engine OIL SUMP...(Should not cause ... coloured grey.)

History on any work that has ever been done to top end of Engine. As in was head removed?

I have experience on our family owned since new (1963) MF with a 3 cylinder Perkins Diesel.

Power Cylinder liners on all 3 cylinder Perkins diesels that I have worked on were always DRY SLEEVES. NOT wet
SLEEVES.

If the tractor was mine, I would remove the Injectors, then turn engine over to verify which cylinder(s) have coolant
in them...????
Then Remove the HEAD.....
Faulty Head Gasket...???
Head was NOT retorqued last time it was removed......???
Check Cylinder sleeve liners as per service manual for correct either STANDOFF or COUNTERSUNK Liners... What ever the
service manual states..??

Mechanic estimates 15k to fully recondition engine of the tractor in the centre of the photo only.
If the sleeves are dry, does that mean they are not connected to the water jacket? Therefore, the leak must be from the head gasket or water pump backing plate?

Head gasket and water pump backing plate seem like repair jobs but sleeve replacement means complete reconditioning of engine?

May I ask why you seem to be focussed on a backing plate as per WATER PUMP?
Coolant entering Oil SUMP through water pump backing plate.....?

The sleeve replacement on the Perkins can be done while the engine is still in the tractor otherwise known as a "in-frame" rebuild so you can replace the sleeves without rebuilding the entire engine.

Suggestion from others has been that electrolysis, may have created a hole in the water pump backing plate and or the sleeves, based on their experience. Appreciate your thoughts. Seemed like an easy enough place to start the investigation, at the water pump plate, then off with head, then to the sleeves.

Ah yes now I understand.. I have found another mechanic, who doesnt drive a Porsche,, and seems more reasonable, but appreciate your thoughts thanks.

The Perkins is a dry sleeve engine, and I have yet to see one that had a pinhole through the bore, and then through the sleeve. More than likely it's just a head gasket that has caused either a overheating, or a water in the oil problem.

Could you please show me a link to this service manual as the one I have , 1856002m2, doesnt deal with the engine???
