MF 165 AG4.212 engine

Have wound up with a Massey 165 with a AG4.212 gas engine! From the S/N a 1973. It appears this engine was a late arrival to the MF165 and reading around a bit, parts can be at a premium, if they can be found. The engine is solid and runs like a champ. (after replacing the dist cap) The issue is it has a bad clutch, and also the multipower is in questionable shape. The tach/Hr meter odometer number are stuck at 5000+
Along with that, the 3 point lift arms seem to jerk up, not run smooth. And something I have not seen before on one of these, is a Hyd pressure and return line connection located on the pto lever cover. I believe Big Dean talked about doing this in one of his articles.
Along with that, there is a transmission filter and it appears a transmission cooler mounted in front of the Radiator. Cannot find this stuff in literature I have found on the 165. Tires are good, transmission shifts smooth, good tin. I am getting ready to do research on getting this tractor in shape, but the engine keeps getting me thinking, if I go thru all this and the engine craps out, not a good thing. Anyone out there have a good tractor with one of these engines that can provide any advice on the engine and it's reliability. Or any other advice is appreciated.

I know someone who had a Massey with the AG-212 engine. He overhauled the engine. I don't think parts were a problem. Does your tractor have "live" PTO with a 2 stage clutch or "independent" PTO with a hydraulic clutch pack that engages and disengages the PTO? The oil cooler in front of the radiator was common on tractors with Multi-Power and IPTO.

The MF dealer I worked for sold his last 165, that had the AG4.212 to my neighbor. Another neighbor had a 180 with the AG4.236, only two Perkins gas around back then. I have a late 8 speed 135 with the AG3.152 gas here now with just under 2000 actual hours on the working tach.

In answer to your question, I don't know how to tell. Something I neglected to mention originally was that the clutch is going bad and no matter what position I place the pto engage or disengage arm the pto continues to turn. I venture that indicates 2 stage clutch but not sure. And as I mentioned, at present, the engine runs like a champ. So far a great running engine. Just was concerned about having a lot of work done to fix things gone south on this tractor and then having engine problems. Thank you for your reply and question. And any more info or questions that you can ask, I will do my best to respond for help.

Look on the PTO shift cover, if there's THREE positions, Neutral, engine, and ground drive you have the two stage dual flywheel clutch. The independent hydraulic PTO was two position. forward is off, fully back is on.
