MF 165 clutch issues

Hi, i have a 1975 MF 165 multipower and recently the tractor has started creeping forward with the clutch pedal fully depressed. It can also be a little tricky to get out of gear into neutral. It's seems like the clutch isn't disengaging fully. I've adjusted the pedal how it's said to in the maintenance book and still not better. It seems to be worse when the tractor is warm. Has anyone got any ideas ?

I've had that happen a few times.

Most likely the friction disk is warped and in need of replacement.

I also once had some of the release lever links broken (due to mis-adjusted clutch) that caused a dragging clutch. (Ours are all dual clutches, not live PTO)

Maybe somebody else will find an easier fix for you, but I think that you are in for a split and clutch R&R.

confirming my worst fears there. Hopefully
someone else can come up with some magic
fix that doesnt involve splitting the
tractor !

You could pull the cover off the bottom and have a look, you probably wont be able to fix it from underneath but you might confirm the need to split. Any signs of oil leaking?

Yes I could take the cover off, what am I looking for exactly ? Signs of damage I presume? No signs of oil leaking, what could that mean? Sorry I'm not totally up to speed with this tractor. Thanks

Oil from either the transmission or the engine can make
the clutch sticky. As to what youre looking for I cant
say exactly but see if anything doesnt look right. The
problem may be laying right on that cover.

It sounds like your tractors have Live PTOs. Live PTO uses a dual (aka two stage) clutch. You can stop travel and keep the PTO running by pushing the clutch about halfway down. A Transmission PTO uses a single stage clutch, pushing the clutch down stops the PTO and travel at the same time. An independent PTO is driven by a separate clutch pack and engaged/disengaged by a lever, without the need to touch the foot clutch.

I have the same tractor, if you put the multi-power in 'low', you won't have that problem. It's common for multi-power to do that. I think they called a hill climb feature because they couldn't figure how to stop it. If you let out the clutch just a little and push it back in quick and move the gear shift right away you'll find it moves easy.
