The 165 doesn't have glow plugs. It probably has the Thermo-Start system. That is basically a little oil burner in the intake manifold. If it has the original key switch, turn the key one position counter clockwise and hold it there for a few seconds. Then turn the key father in the same direction and it should engage the starter. The engine will suck the warmed air and maybe the flame into the cylinders. I have started my 65 down to 16*F that way in an emergency, but I prefer to plug in the block heater for a half hour.

Thank you for your response, but the key does not turn counterclockwise I can only turn it to the right side.

The thing about a 50 year old machine is things such as a switch get replaced and maybe not with the proper part. They may have just used the dreaded starting fluid and went on with their day. Looking on the AGCO parts catalog I don’t see anything about a Thermostart system but I may not be looking for the correct name. Glow plugs systems have visible screw in plugs near each injector with wires attached to them. The Thermostart would be on the intake manifold with both a wire and fuel line connecting to it.

thermostart is the right name. but could it be that it was equipment that was optional, a bit like a heater block? So not all tractors were equipped with it.
