MF 165: Not Starting

HI THERE! This was my first "electrical " job on my dependable Perkins diesel MF165. I just replaced the externally regulated alternator with an internal. It started right up fine several times....until one evening no click, no sound, nothing! Earlier in the day the 3-speed shifter was stuck so I finally forced it into gear.
Battery has a full charge according to my batt. charger, fender lights work, and connections seem tight. Where do I 'start'??? Did I ruin a tranny rod? Is it the neutral safety switch?
By the way, everyone on this forum does an awesome job. Thanks! -Dandy

I would start at the neutral safety switch, clean connections and "straight wire"(use CAUTION!) to see if it turns over. When you mentioned "forcing" it in gear it sounds like you "may" have damaged the switch OR it"s not in the correct position to make the circuit. Try moving the lever some so it ends up at the "S" position. A diesel doesn"t care if you have a windmill for charging, 12V at the starter is what turns it over.

Hi,
I would agree with everything MF#1 has said. Don't like the idea of you forcing the gearlever though. If something is blocking it force is not the answer. Its unlikely that you will have damaged the switch but it should be removed and the range lever operation checked. Join the wires together and attempt to start as normal but make SURE its in neutral first. If your battery and starter are good and still nothing happens, attach a cable from the white/blue cable to the starter solenoid and test. There may be a break in the white/red cable. If it is a faulty switch it should be replaced immediately.
