What are your thought on the 175 model? I am looking for a diesel tractor in the 50 to 70 HP range and I was looking for an oliver or a JD, but the prices are so high that I decided to take a look at the Massey's. I saw that the 175 has the power I am looking for and when I went to Tractor House, I couldn't believe the low prices they were asking. Seeing these low prices , I am know wondering f there is some inherent problem with these models that people don't want them and that is why they are going so cheap.

The 175 could be had with a 2 stage clutch or Independent PTO and with or without Multi-Power. The early gas models had a Continental 206 engine. Parts for that engine are a problem. All of the diesels and the late gassers had the Perkins 236 for which parts are readily available. Later models were also available with a 4x2 transmission without MP. They came in standard clearance version with 28 or 30 inch rear tires or High Arch with 38 inch rear tires. In my opinion, a 175 with the 2 stage clutch and the 8 speed tranny is about as bullet proof as any tractor.

Hi, a good solid tractor as Bob has said. Only problems encountered with UK 175s is the dry brakes. When the seals wear or age oil can get onto the inboard discs and render the brakes almost useless. When they wear they have a tendency to jamb on in extreme cases. Frequently the tractor direction has to be changed briefly to release them. Quite a heavy job to remove the axle housings etc to replace the discs, seals and actuators. If the tractor has power steering check for equal assistance to both sides. Look for play in the steering mechanism particularly in the main shaft where it passes through the axle casting.

I agree that they are fairly bullet prof. I bought my 175 with 6,750 hours on it, it smokes a little bit out of the breather tube when it's really working hard, but that's it. Fairly easy to fix with parts readily available. Nothing but the usual issues- leaky injector pump, leaky valve cover gasket, leaky exhaust gasket- nothing major. The Perkins diesel is very reliable.
I have heard of brake issues but luckily have not encountered that.
