MF 240 Filter numbers?

Purchased a parts and operators manual for my new to me late 70s model 240 and neither one lists the filter numbers. Anyone happen to have a list of part numbers for this tractor? Both air filters, both fuel filters, and oil filter would be appreciated.

I have been searching the internet and keep coming up with different numbers, and one size fits all listings. Like air filter fitting both 240 and 245 when I know the filter on my 245 will not fit my 240. Completely different design. Found it very strange that they wouldn't put this info in ops manual since fluid types and capacities was included.

Operator's manuals I'm familiar with don't list filters. Fluids, capacities, lubrication, adjustments, and service info they do have. Parts books show filters. It seems strange you have a parts book that doesn't have the filters shown.

I suggest you go to the AGCO parts books site on line. I looked there and there are 3 variations of the 240 tractor with each having a different parts book. AGCO book numbers 819786,651615, and 651472. So it would be hard to be sure one is giving you the right numbers with the info provided. Is your parts book one of these or something else? Then there are different filters used within the same book for such as the air filters. Have you looked for visible numbers on the filters on your tractor? Did you pull the air filters out and check for numbers, they are often marked.

Here is a link you can click to go to the AGCO parts book site: https://apb.agcocorp.com/.

Clicking on the View Books will take you to the model search page. Enter 240 in the Model search box, check the manufacturer's box for Massey Ferguson, and check the Exact Match box then click search. The three options I listed should come up to chose from. You will need to figure out which is yours, and then which filter options it has. They have drawings with the filter/element numbers listed. A good parts store can cross the MF numbers if you want to get other than MF filters.

Thanks for such a detailed response!

I mistakenly said I purchased the parts manual, what I meant to say was shop manual. Will check out the link you posted to try and find the filters I need.

Thanks to your help I found my filters. Out of the 3 books listed none has a correct looking air filter except the "Prior To 522354" book. My serial number is 559863 and was made in Great Britain. The other 2 books listed looked like newer versions of the 240. So glad to now have a correct resource for parts, thanks again for your assistance.

Now to find a good alternative to Permatran 3 so I can start changing fluids. Closest Agco dealer is almost 3 hours away and shipping would be outrageous.

While Permatran would be a first choice, any hyd fluid that meets that spec will work fine. Tractor Supply, Sams Club, and most auto parts places should carry it. Glad you got your filters, it's a shame that there are that many variations but that's the way it goes sometimes.

Many sources out there if you aren't wanting to use just Permatran III. Most parts stores that have Universal Tractor Hydraulic Transmission Fluids will have at least one meeting the Permatran III specs, ask them. Walmart, TSC, and others will have them as well; you need to read the labels, or ask for data sheets, to see that the fluid says it meets or exceeds the Permatran III spec.

Thanks everyone for all the help. Going to pick up 10 gallons of Travellers Premium UTF this weekend. This tractor is a true barn find. Older gentlemen passed away and his daughter sold it to me. 700 hours and still had original dry rotted tires, stamped made in Great Britain.

Looking forward to new fluids and filters, already have new rubber on the way.

Definitely had water in it!

Should i pour a couple gallons of cheap motor oil or hydraulic fluid in and start tractor for couple minutes, then drain to flush all that crap out? Maybe raise 3 point 1 time?

Before I flush it I like to pull the pto side cover off, and clean, or replace the strainer (take's a little time but I think it's worth it as they usually never get looked at) plus you can see what kind of stuff is siting at the bottom (and maybe scoop out some of the crud). I flush them out with diesel when they are like that (diesel is cheaper) but I don't run it with diesel in it. I put like around 2 gallons of diesel in at a time, then drain it (you can strain the diesel you use to flush so you don't keep having use fresh diesel for the first few times). I keep doing that until its pretty clean (it probably won't get completely clean). Then I put the cheap UTF in it, raise, and lower the 3 point a bunch of times. Drive it around for a few hours so it gets good, and warm, drain the cheap UTF afterwards while it's still warm, then put in the better UTF. It should be ok after that.

I ended up adding 5 gallons of hyd fluid and 1 gallon of ATF. Then drove around a bit, raised and lowered lift several times, and ran pto. Didn't want to do to much since was still coup[le gallons low. Then drained and refilled with good stuff. I will probably bush hog couple times then drain and refill again in couple months.
