A friend has a mf 245 that will no longer run over 1400 rpm. getting plenty of fuel, clean filters, lube in the fuel.open return line, air system is clean and open, rebuilt injection pump about six years ago, probably less than 500 hours. It starts normally and runs smoothly and has enough power to drive on the road in high gear even up some decent hills, just wont rev up. Any ideas? both springs in the top of the pump are intact.Any help would be appreciated. This guy is no amature, but his experience is in gasoline powered vehicles.

I'm no expert but if it doesn't rev up with the throttle linkage disconnected by manually moving the throttle lever on the pump, it might be an injection pump problem.

Tell me you removed the fuel shut off from the fuel tank and and cleaned the wire mesh sticking up into the tank.
I have a 245 diesel with over 5000 hours on it, the pump has never been touched. For his to have already had the injector pump rebuilt makes me wonder what it's history has been like. Diesels like clean fuel and the fuel needs to gush out of the tank line like pouring water out of a boot. I also wonder if the transfer pump was ever replaced?

He tells me plenty of fuel flow, injection pump was rebuilt about six years ago, probably not 500 hours use since then and this guy is great on maintenance.

I would agree with jtxn, move the throttle on the pump manually and see if it revs up. If it doesn't throttle up that way its probably the pump. If it does rev up when doing that, something's wrong with the linkage along the way up to the throttle on the dash.

After watching Bundy Bears pump rebuild on you tube he said the spring on inside of top cover has to be in the same hole as it was previous along with a ring that's precisely marked prior to removal. Bet Dieseltech knows.

tractor ran fine for five years, althoughn not used a lot, mowing a few acres and pulling wood, then about two weeks ago it will no longer rev up. No settings or connections have been changed and all maintenance done. nothing was changed before it topped out at 1400

check the injector pump shut off cable on the injector pump cover and make sure it allowing the pump shut off lever to be turned completely on, if the travel is ok try removing disconnecting the shut off lever from the cable and work it by hand, in doing so if the shut off lever under the injector pump is sticking it may free it up. If you get it freed up put good grade fuel additive in the fuel as the ultra low Sulphur fuel used today has little if any corrosion protection.
