MF 2600 HD series

Guys,

I'm a old Ford guy but am now considering NH and Massey tractors. I need something in the 65-85hp range. No i can't stand Kubota and Deere so don't even mention it. Sorry but I've been on both on several occasions in past and just don't feel it if you know what I mean. The good part is that parts are available and don't get me wrong as I get that but I need more old school low RPM grunt if you know what I mean. So am I crazy for trying to stick with the old school big block low RPM machines? I mean these dudes are heavy (lots of steel) and get'er done type mentality. But I know maybe there missing some of new pretty bells and whistles so I need someone thats experienced both to give me some advice. I really like the specs of the MF 2600 HD series and the New Holland T4030 and equivalents. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Thank you

You say "any thoughts"? Wellll, my thought is, the manual on my 1997 Massey Ferguson 240 Perkins diesel says to not operate at low RPM,s but warm it up at 1200 RPM for a few minutes, and operate at 1700 RPM, and do not just idle around and lope around. When I do that, I get excellent mileage, no smoke, no slobbering, no oil usage.

Good info. Being more specific I normally operate my Fords and Massey 461 at 1500-1800. All are diesel engines and run very strong in this range. My reference to many of the Deeres and Kubota have engines with PTO speeds of upward of 2600 rpms. Anything below 2-2200 they are worthless. Maybe this is to produce faster hydraulic movements but not sure. IMO driving them is not nearly as functional or enjoyable as the old school low rpm engine designs.

Are the 2600 HD series good reliable tractors or should I look at a different MF product line? I'm looking at utility tractors. Thanks

The 2600 series is kind of too new for most of us. All of the newer tractors have more options which equals more stuff to go wrong, plus they have emissions systems on the newer tractors (more stuff to go wrong). If you were looking at the older 100, or 200 series utility tractors that are simpler to work on that would be a different story. Do you need a tractor that new, and what do you plan on using it for?
